A multi-disciplinary exploration of the relationship between the city and the sea through a specific focus on our local place, the Illawarra. We consider people’s connection to the sea at a time when sea levels are rising in a changing climate, and ways in which the social, cultural and political landscape is changing along with this. The exhibition consists of a 3 hour 40 minute video of the entire Illawarra coastline, filmed from a boat moving slowly southwards from Stanwell Park to Shellharbour. Accompanying the video is a 26 metre long watercolour of the coastline seen from the boat, and a poem by Wadi Wadi elder Aunty Barbara Nicholson, reflecting on the deep time of Aboriginal habitation and more recent memories of life on the coast. Additionally there is a video of the watercolour and poem, voiced by Aunty Barbara.
